They have been an active mobile phone company for years, and are right up there with other big name brands. Their latest phone, the I5700 Galaxy Portal has just been released, and is currently available in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The phone itself is a slight downgrade from the Galaxy i7500, and this may be some indication as to why the Portal was previously referred to as the Galaxy Lite.

It features a 3 megapixel camera, which won’t give you outstanding quality but will still enable you to capture your favorite moments or special times. Running on the Android operating system developed by Google, and running an 800MHz CPU the phone is fast and will not take a long to perform small tasks such as loading up and starting applications.

The phone has heavy links to Google, and this can be seen with the high levels of integration. For instance, usually to access Google programs you have to open up an internet browser and go to Google and then find the application. With the Galaxy Portal, there are programs built into the phone that direct you straight to the program, so for instance if you clicked on a Google Maps link, you would be taken straight there saving you time and effort. The phone has GPS compatibility which will give you access to the internet, although not as quick as other systems would such as 3G. It won’t be long before you will be able to pick up the i5700 Galaxy Portal on contract or pay as you go, with Samsung set to release the handset in the coming months through T-Mobile.

Anyway, it seems that bringing Android phones over to UK shores is becoming a bit of hit or miss, but at least the most we get is a long delay –as opposed to not getting the device at all. Just look at the case of the Motorola DROID. When the device first popped out, it was a Verizon US exclusive that seemed like it would never reach UK shores. Good thing Motorola decided to give it a new name and bring it over as the Milestone.

Seems like that is the secret to bringing a device over to the UK -a new name; such is the case with the Samsung Galaxy i5700 Spica. Samsung has renamed the device to Portal and now, T-Mobile UK will have the device available. The Android smart phone is free on T-Mobile’s 18 month 23 Pound plan.

Having the Samsung Portal available at this time is a big bonus for many Android fans that are not willing to shell out lots of money on a phone. Currently, most of the newer Android phones carry high-end hardware such as Snapdragon processors and HD cameras; it is pretty rare to see the little green robot on lower end devices. The Portal brings about the right balance of features and hardware for a more budget friendly device.

This new budget Android will come with an impressive 3.2 inch touch screen (320 x 480 pixels of resolution) and a 3.15 mega pixel camera (comes with video, autofocus and geo-tagging; no LED flash though). It may seem high end, but with today’s standards, the Portal is only mid tier. The phone also comes with a high capacity 1500 mAh battery to keep the phone running for hours on end.

Is the budget Android your thing? Head right to the source for more.
