Enter Samsung’s latest offering to the mobile phone community – The Wave.

A slim mobile with a 3.3″ touch screen gives this phone an aura of class and fashion. But that does not mean that it takes anything away from the practical end. Indeed over the last few years, with the recession biting into consumers’ pockets, many have opted for practicality and function over basic design – so it’s good to know that the Samsung Wave deals available can offer the practicality and function required without sacrificing style, or breaking the banks (again).

The 800 x 480 pixels screen proves to be more than sufficient to meet the demands of web surfing and photo viewing and with a Wi-Fi support and a 3.5G high-speed data option, not to mention its 1ghz processor and 2gb internal memory with the ability to expand to 32gb, video streaming will be accessible like never before on a Samsung phone. Indeed 720p HD video playback will be perfectly acceptable to its processor. A 5 mega-pixel camera and the ability to record in HD gives The Wave a further edge in multimedia mobile technology.

However perhaps the most appealing element of this new offering from Samsung is the debut of its Operation System – Bada. While it is not entirely new – the system is based on existing proprietary OS – it does include a new ‘layer’ which will enable a innovative developing community to thrive. What does this mean? In essence it will allow something akin to the ‘iPhone apps’ to flourish and give The Wave an ‘open source’ feel to it as it will mean that independent developers and programmers will work closely with Samsung to let the phone reach its full potential.

For some the size of The Wave, 118 mm, will be a put off to those who want a compact mobile but when you realize what it has to offer this should quickly become a distant apprehension. Furthermore others have raised concerns over its new Operation System, however there is no reason why it shouldn’t be able to succeed with a committed group of developers behind it and it seems as though there is little to stop The Wave making a huge splash in the mobile market. The Samsung Wave is available on Vodafone now.

Do you ever get annoyed by words? Well, obviously, when you’re walking down the high street and all the little kids gather round you and point and laugh and call you those terrible things words can be very annoying indeed. What do you mean that doesn’t happen to you? It happens to everyone, doesn’t it? Say it’s true like our mothers told us, say we’re not the only ones… But anyway, certain words – especially made up ones, or ones whose usage has been corrupted by advertising monkeys – really wind us up. And today’s word of shame is one that’s been shoved into our faces so many times now we just can’t stomach it any more. And that word… widget. This special little word has been gnawing at our minds since the days of plastic things in beer cans that annoyed us as we were gulping them down in the local park. It became one of those words that was whipped out anytime the ad-monkeys decided that the science behind an invention / add-on / gimmick was simply too complex for our silly little minds.

But in the last year or two, the word has been peddled more then the village bike. Mobile Widgets, Widget Platforms, Widget Commerce… it’s all become so widespread that no-one even pays attention to how stupid a word it is. So when we came across things like the official page for the Samsung Tocco Lite, along with all the other trailing press release nonsense, we just couldn’t take it. “Mobile widgets customize the screen with embedded widgets such as clock, scheduler, and other useful apps. Online widgets connect you to useful info including stock updates, weather forecast, latest news…” Aahhhhh, make it stop, make it stop. How can they use that word 3 times in so little space?! Anyway, the Samsung Tocco Lite does indeed have some easy, instant-access options for accessing the certain things the internet, and indeed the phone itself, have to over. But, seriously, do they need to be called widgets? Can’t they just be buttons? Or options? Or tabs, even, we like tabs as a word.

[Rant disengaged. Breating returning to normal. Red mist lightening] Read this Samsung Tocco Lite review if you’re hungry for more stats, or have a little look at the (foreign) TV ad below that is about the Tocco Lite even if it doesn’t at first seem to be.
